This wild tomato is native to Andes from Ecuador to Peru in forests at altitude 333-12000 ft ASL. it is sprawling perennial shrubs or vines to 20 ft long, but usually smaller. This is the story behind this tomato: "A man named John Mathews from B.C. Canada Received seeds from a tomato farmer in China who claimed they were in his family for two generations." The Chinese Tea Tomato has a red skin with orange red flesh inside getting to about 2 inches round and weighting about 1.5 oz. Here is the Peruvian Wild Tomato Type 1, Lycopersicon peruvianum, Solanum peruvianum, new for 2023. This wild tomato from central Peru to northern Chile is a very rare tomato type to come across! It is Indeterminate, semi regular leaf, perennial and produces 1/2" sized, pale green and one stripe on bottom, with some purple shoulders. The tomatoes have a smooth pale skin and can be heavy producing variety. We found this variety to be resistant to most diseases. The fruits are edible but may contain some alkaloids when unripe. This species tends to handle colder climates and grows well in very dry conditions. This verity appears to be self-compatible but fruits late in season.
