Here is the Buffalobur, Solanum rostratum. This thorny tomato originates from USA and northern an central Mexico. Solanum rostratum is also called Solanum cornutum and goes under a few other names like: Spiny Nightshade, Colorado Bur, Kansas Thistle, Mexican Thistle, Texas thistle and a few other names. It grows wild in fields, pastures, fence rows and roadsides. This annual herb grows from 1 to 2 feet tall and is completely covered in spines. Fruits are about .5 to 1 inches in diameter with blackish inedible berries completely covered by a spiny calyx very similar to the litchi tomato. The plants, especially the leaves and green fruit, are poisonous and contain the glycoalkaloid solanine as well as other tropane alkaloids. Only grow as an ornamental and do not attempt to eat any part of the plant.
