Here is the Laurentian Rutabaga, Brassica napus, variety napobrassica. This Rutabaga has Canadian origins that date back to the 1900's. The Laurentian Rutabaga is a Canadian variation of the American Purple Top Rutabaga. It is a firm creamy white flesh purple top type Rutabaga with a crisp slightly sweet flavor that goes good in any recipe. It can be eaten raw or cooked and make a great mash potato like dish. They can grow to about 3 to 5 inches and plants get to around 2 feet tall. Because Rutabaga seeds are direct sown in the garden, preparing your soil early in the planning process is essential. Poor soil can negatively affect the flavor, quality and growth of the Rutabagas so be sure to use high quality soil that is soft and loamy. they are biennial so best harvested in first year. Great in soups and stews! Open pollinated 67 days.
