Here is the Grand Rapids Leaf Lettuce, Lactuca sativa. This superb leaf lettuce is right on target. It has shown higher tolerance to cold as well as moderate ability to withstand heat while reluctance to BER even when left overcrowded under difficult conditions of excessive rainfall. Head size can range from 4 to 10 inches across and can be picked off leaf by leaf for salads as the head grows. This is a leaf variety but does form a semi head. It is very crinkly toothed leaves fold into tight, tight hard medium-green heads without give. An excellent alternative to iceberg lettuce. They grow best in cool weather with medium moisture. Use shade cloth to keep summer lettuce tender and sweet longer. Open pollinated 40 to 65 days.
