Four Seasons Lettuce
Here is the Four Seasons Lettuce, Lactuca sativa. This superb lettuce is a French butterhead lettuce. It has shown higher tolerance to cold as well as moderate ability to withstand heat while reluctance to bolt even when left overcrowded under difficult conditions of excessive rainfall. Head size can range from 4 to 12 inches across and can be picked off leaf by leaf for salads as the head grows. This is a bib head variety but does form a semi head. It is very crinkly smooth leaves fold into loose medium green-purple heads without give. An excellent alternative to romaine lettuce. They grow best in cool weather with medium moisture. Use shade cloth to keep summer lettuce tender and sweet longer. Open pollinated 40 to 60 days.
