Here is the 1884 Tomato, Solanum lycopersicum. This old time variety is said to originate from West Virginia USA. This tomato has quite an interesting history dating back to 1884. It is said that it was found growing in a pile of debris caused by the great Ohio River flood of 1884 in Friendly W.V. by James Lyde Williamson. This ruffled beefsteak tomato has a deep red or purple tone skin and a dark red flesh inside getting to about 3+ inches across and weighting up to 1 or 2 Lbs. Plants can get to 8 feet tall in really good soil but plants tend to get to 4.5 feet tall. The fully ripened fruits will have a deep rich color to them. Great tasting tomatoes for salads, eating fresh and for tomato sauce and slicing! Open pollinated, indeterminate, regular leaf, mid season, pink or deep red, ruffled, beefsteak, 70 to 90+ days.
