Here is the Emerald Green Okra, PI 675122, Abelmoschus esculentus. It is also know as the Emerald Green Velvet Okra. This variety was created by the Campbell Soup Company in the 1950's. It produces large yields of thick walled, tender, and spineless 5 to 8 inch dark green fruits that stay soft and edible much longer then other verities. Plants grow to about  2 to 5 feet tall with leave that get to 9 inches wide! This variety also does quite well in northern climates where other are much more sensitive to cooler weather. It is always best to harvest when pods are young and crispy. one of our best sellers and widely used by southern gardeners who have made okra a staple of their cooking. We find this variety great for eating raw but also good for pickling. Open pollinated 45 to 60 days.

    Planting and Harvesting Tips:
Start indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost of spring. Transplant outside after the soil has warmed to 65˚ to 75˚F. Sow one inch deep and space 12-18 inches apart in rows 3-4 feet apart. Plants prefer full sun and moist soil with plenty of organic matter.
Harvest daily with a sharp knife during hot weather — pods taste best when young and grow quickly past the stage of prime eating. Wear gloves and long sleeves for protection from spines.
